The stag beetle—named for its massive mandibles that resemble the antlers of a stag—is the largest terrestrial insect in Europe. These oversized mandibles are used to wrestle other stag beetles for preferred mates and food. A bit intimidating to encounter due to their looks, they are mostly harmless to humans. While some species can grow to be 12 cm, most are in the range of 5 cm.
