A flagstone patio accented with red decompressed granite creates a main landing and a tall arbor is an inviting entranceway into the rest of the yard. A unique kidney-shaped lawn with lots of flowing plants provides a great place for the kids to play.

Homeowners Allen Stern and Mai Vu have a flat backyard surrounded with a cement border. Landscape designer Sean Quigley creates an Asian-inspired garden that is also kid friendly with a dry river bed, sand box, arbor and red patio.

Allen Stern and Mai Vu describe their yard as "a swimming pool without water" because of its rectangular lawn surrounded by concrete. They'd like to divide the space into a couple outdoor rooms, including an Asian-themed hideaway.

A dry creek bed with sparkling tumbled glass flows under an arching redwood bridge. Not only is it low maintenance, but it's also perfectly safe for the kids.

A sand box and herb garden made out of the old concrete sit on opposite ends of the yard. Pea gravel fills the back of the yard, where a bench mimics the arch of the arbor.

The couple needs a safe place for their young kids to play, as well as a grown-up space where they can relax. Vu loves the color blue and would like to incorporate it into the design.
