Location: Paxton Gate
FREE

On Friday October 22nd we have the pleasure of hosting one of our favorite jewelry artists from the east coast, Amber Mahler! Her delicate unique works consist of foliage she finds in her garden and immortalizes through casting. She uses a technique called lost wax casting to create silver and gold originals of the actual flowers and branches she gathers. This commitment to "live casting" insures that the artist must continually forage for or grow in her garden new material to be cast. The beauty of the lost wax technique is that each casting is entirely unique.

Exhibit run September 30th – November 16th
Location: Paxton Gate’s Curiosities for Kids
FREE

Paxton Gate

Dressing animals in human clothing is a common device in stories for children. We imbue animals with human traits and describe people's personalities by comparing them to animals. Aesop's fables and Kipling's Just So stories are tales with animal characters that really tell us more about ourselves than they do about the animal kingdom. In these portraits I imagine a world where these animals that populate our stories walk and talk and dress like us. What stories do you think they would tell about us?

Amanda G. Quinn is a mixed media artist and scenic carpenter. At work she builds things that fill entire rooms and at home she builds rooms that fit in your hand. She lives with her husband, two cats and a great many carnivorous plants in rainy Seattle.

Show Runs July 1st – August 17th, 2010
Location: Paxton Gate’s Curiosities for Kids

Emily Jan - Cape Buffalo

Drawing upon years of travel and exposure to the living myth and mythology of her adopted homelands of South Africa and southern Mexico, she creates eerie animal forms which are not quite alive but not quite dead either.
In the company of Paxton Gate’s usual residents – the traditionally

taxidermy animal mounts down the street in the original 824 Valencia location – Jan’s creatures are ghostly presences which seem to emerge from the walls rather than hang upon them. Made of organic materials – caning reed and hog intestine, otherwise known as sausage casings – Jan’s sculptures refer to the grotesque intersection between humanity and the natural world.

Ehren’s recent work relies upon books and other found materials as she blends together traditional craft, contemporary media and remnants of consumer culture to investigate interpersonal relationships and contemporary culture. Her process employs digital media reinterpreted through stitching and embroidery, creating works that develop a conversation between the ethereal world of technology and the hand-hewn physicality of craft.

December

“You Had to be there”
By Jennifer Muskopf

Artist’s Reception December 3rd, 6:00 – 8:00pm
Show Runs December 2nd – January 20th

“You Had to be there” By Jennifer Muskopf

Soft sculptures by Clive & Sunshine's Jennifer Muskopf, impersonating some of our least favorite, but most common insect encounters: Cockroaches! See them in a new way: plush and elegant.

Jennifer's works are detailed scenes depicting the strangeness of the ordinary objects around us: the structures we build, the plants we care for and those that grow freely, animals, clouds, the sea, the distance between things.

By juxtaposing these elements with icons and personal imagery, she weaves a story of secret truths the way myths make known to us the unknowable.

“Gnawer of the Moon”
Trolls in Norwegian Folktales by Manette Garrison

Artist’s Reception November 5th from 6 – 8pm
Show runs November 4th – December 2nd, 2009

Manette Garrison

Manette Garrison's work takes Norwegian folklore to the next level.  Instead of catering to the youth as many illustrator and children's authors do, she has really captures what was in the minds of the original story teller in all of its spooky glory.  The subjects almost become part of their surrounding environment, peaking at the outside world.  They are somehow beautiful, scary and docile all in the same breath.

The artist was born in Minnesota and attributes some of her inspiration to its Scandinavian culture from early Norwegian and Swedish settlers.  She was fascinated by harshness and contrast  that is reflected in folktales and the tension between good and evil and their practical advice and moral lessons.

Manette graduated with a BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has shown in both Chicago and San Francisco.
